This course is directed at wheel throwers who already have consistent experience on the wheel and are looking for an opportunity to perfect their skills and learn from a master thrower.
You will learn to throw larger amounts of clay (+3kg) and make much bigger pieces (taller than 30cm). You will learn different tricks and techniques for throwing large objects, from centering huge amounts of clay to making pieces from different parts. You will be able to push your limits with the guidance of an experienced teacher who will help you perfect your skills. You will have a unique chance to fully immerse yourself in the practice of wheel throwing, making progress that would be hard to achieve within the noise of everyday life.
By the end of the retreat you will have the opportunity to choose which piece(s) you would like fired, glazed and shipped to you. As pieces need approximately a week to dry out, this will be done for you once the retreat has concluded.
Outcome
Although the course is focussed on learning rather than making pieces, you will be able to keep some of the pieces you make:
Alessandro Strano, is a Sicilian master wheel thrower and founder of Studio MUD, a first-of-its-kind intercultural ceramics hub in Palermo.
Alessandro has over 30 years of experience as a ceramicist specialised in wheel throwing, and has perfected his skills over the decades by working at different studios and collaborating with local and international artists before founding a studio of his own in 2018.
Alessandro’s own ceramics pieces have a unique style that merges traditional Sicilian aesthetics and modern minimalism and elevates wheel throwing’s aesthetics.
He is one of Salemi Ceramics' first Sicilian friends, and has a special place in the Salemi Ceramics family. We're excited to have him teach at our studio, and we're sure you'll love his course!!!

The Salemi School of Ceramics is a social enterprise that has been opened to create a learning centre for contemporary ceramics, the first of its kind in Sicily.
The School has been created in partnership with the local town of Salemi, which has provided the gorgeous space - the St Agustin Convent - that will be used for the school.
Salemi has a gorgeous historical centre and because it is quiet and peaceful, it is the perfect place for a mindful ceramics retreat.
