The ceramics workshop retreats in Salemi, Sicily are designed for all ceramics abilities, from beginners, to intermediates, to those looking for expert-led experiences. Participants will have practical hands on learning and refining their skills, taught by an experienced and passionate resident ceramicist. Learn about ceramics, and when not in the Studio, you will enjoy local Sicilian experiences, while sharing meals with others. Our retreats offer a unique opportunity to learn and create in a beautiful setting.
It is important to know that your pieces will not be ready to take home with you at the end of the retreat, as pieces take approximately a week to completely dry, all firing and glazing will be done after the retreat has finished. Before you leave you will be able to decide which pieces you would like to keep and have shipped to you once you are home (shipping at your cost).
There are multiple options near our Studio in Salemi.
Salemi Ceramics is located in the old town of Salemi, Sicily. It is based in the (former) Chiostro Di Sant’Agostino in Salemi.
Here is a link to Google Maps that shows precisely where the Convent is. We strongly recommend staying in the old town of Salemi so you can have a short stroll to and from the Studio. Salemi is situated on a hilltop, and the walk goes through curvy, extremely steep streets to the top, where Piazza Liberta (meeting point during the retreats) is located. You can find more information in our Location Guide. If you feel unsure which one to choose, please contact us, and we would be happy to help you!
Anyone with an interest in ceramics, from beginners to experienced artists, is welcome to join. It's a great place to learn new skills or improve what you already know.

Yes, we do our best to accommodate a variety of food allergies and intolerances such as dairy, nuts, and vegetarian or vegan diets. We work closely with local restaurants and caterers to meet these needs. However, given that meals are outsourced, flexibility can sometimes be limited.
We can offer some gluten-free options, but it’s important to note that accommodating strict gluten-free diets or coeliac disease can be challenging due to the possibility of cross-contamination in local kitchens. Since we work with local restaurants and caterers, we cannot guarantee a gluten-free environment. If you have coeliac disease, we recommend taking extra precautions, such as bringing gluten-free snacks or meals as a backup.
We communicate with our local food partners about allergies and dietary restrictions, but because their kitchens are not fully allergen-free, there is a risk of cross-contamination, particularly with gluten. We recommend that individuals with severe allergies, including coeliac disease, be aware of this risk and plan accordingly.
We outsource lunches to local restaurants and provide other meals through local catering services. These meals are made using fresh, regional ingredients. While we strive to accommodate dietary needs, we rely on external partners, and some restrictions may be harder to fulfil.
Please inform us well in advance of your specific dietary restrictions so we can communicate them to our food partners. For those with severe allergies, particularly where cross-contamination could pose a serious risk, we suggest bringing your own snacks or supplementary food to ensure your safety and comfort.
Before the retreat, we’ll send out a form where you can detail any allergies or intolerances. Please be as specific as possible, so we can liaise with local restaurants to provide suitable meal options where feasible.
Some local restaurants do offer gluten-free options, but they may not always be suitable for those with severe gluten intolerance or coeliac disease due to the risk of cross-contamination. We recommend discussing your needs with us before the retreat and possibly bringing extra gluten-free products.
Yes, you are welcome to bring your own snacks or meals to supplement the provided food. This can be particularly helpful for those with strict dietary needs, such as coeliac disease or severe allergies.
We will do our best to accommodate you, but if it becomes clear that local restaurants or caterers are unable to meet your specific needs, we encourage you to bring additional food or snacks that you know are safe for you to consume.
Our food partners offer flexible options, but there may be some limitations depending on the restaurant or caterer. We will do our best to provide meals that align with your dietary needs, but please understand that local resources may not always allow for full customization.
Local experiences include meeting our local friends and business owners, exploring local surrounds culture, history, and natural beauty. You will eat typical Sicilian dishes at local restaurants and 'in house' in the convent courtyard.
During the summer months (June-July-August), the weather gets really hot, reaching 35°C (95°F) and sometimes even higher. The good news is that we have air conditioning in our studio, especially in the wheel-throwing room, so you'll be comfortable while you're working.Although it's hot during the summer, the evenings can be chilly (Salemi is on a hilltop) because of the wind. It's good to have a light sweater or jacket with you for those nights.During the winter months the weather is cooler, ranging between 15-20°C (59-68°F). It tends to start cooling down from mid October.
